NEW YORK ATHLETIC CLUB ROWING

FACILITIES & TRAINING

Facilities

The NYAC rows on the Orchard Beach Lagoon in Pelham, NY, at the eastern border of The Bronx and Westchester Counties. The 2000m course was home to the 1964 US Olympic Trials. The boathouse is equipped with a spacious erg and weight room as well as locker rooms and showers. There are 5 boat bays stocked with sculling and sweep shells.

Recently the boat house was "retrofitted" with new ceilings, fans, women's locker room facilities, and a new security system. All of the boathouse occupants are extremely grateful and pleased with all the recent renovations the club has put forth for these efforts.

Training

It seems that the home-grown work ethic of the nearby Metropolis carries over into the rowing world here at NYAC.  While the athletes partake in some festive soirees and snooze their way into work on mass transit, these are earned privileges after the hard daily practices.

Practices are held six days a week to train for upcoming races. During the work week, the women rally before work, training from 5:30-7:00 am.  The men's team practices in the evening after work, meeting at the boathouse at 6:30 pm.  On weekends, the teams join up at 8:30am to venture out on the Lagoon.

Workouts vary depending on the season, but the emphasis is always on competitive pieces which allow athletes to improve by testing their skills against one another.
